Several neighborhoods in Hidalgo County, Texas finally had their solar lights installed thanks to the perseverance of LUPE leaders who presented their case in a public hearing of the Commissioners Court in support of designating funds to cover the cost of the installation in the 6 colonias. La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) was founded by César Chávez, rooted in the belief that members of the low-income community have the responsibility and the obligation to organize themselves, and through their association, begin to advocate and articulate for the issues and factors that impact their lives.
Sol Inc. CEO Paul Wickberg was recently interviewed by Heather Clancy of ZD Net for their GreenTech Pastures blog titled "Commercial-grade solar lighting for the great outdoors", which focuses on why Sol’s lighting can be as cost-effective for new construction as ‘traditional’ lighting systems.
I just read an article today about a debt-ridden city in Michigan who could no longer afford its monthly electric bill and the elected officials not only turned off 1,000 streetlights. They had them ripped out -- bulbs, poles and all. If this city had installed solar-powered lights, at least the residents would have not been left in the dark when the city ran into financial problems.
