Lynx Transit Shelter Lighting
Overview
Central Florida continues to be a thriving region of the country in terms of both residents and visitors. In December 2006, Downtown Orlando Transportation Plan (DOTP) adopted the call for “sustainability” and a “livable community” and realized a need to improve its transportation system in order to fulfill that vision. LYNX, central Florida’s transportation authority, and the city of Orlando committed to a plan to make the system safer, more convenient and vital.
LYNX provides bus service for Orange, Osceola and Volusia Counties with 270 buses, 4,441 bus stops and 626 bus shelters. To uphold their commitment, LYNX and the City decided the simplest and most cost effective solution would be improved lighting, and solar would answer the need for sustainability. And, they both saw an opportunity to increase revenues.
RESULT
In 2010, LYNX was able to pull the trigger on installing TSSL Solar Lighting Systems by Sol to light up the shelters. In addition, they realized by adding Sol’s Transit Shelter Ad Lighting (TSAL), LYNX could generate an incremental $500,000 or more per year in revenues. Currently, Sol’s lighting solutions have been installed in half of the shelters.
