I wanted to share a blog by Jared Janes of the Monitor. It is a great piece regarding how solar lights have improved the quality of life for residents by reducing crime.
Several neighborhoods in Hidalgo County, Texas finally had their solar lights installed thanks to the perseverance of LUPE leaders who presented their case in a public hearing of the Commissioners Court in support of designating funds to cover the cost of the installation in the 6 colonias. La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) was founded by César Chávez, rooted in the belief that members of the low-income community have the responsibility and the obligation to organize themselves, and through their association, begin to advocate and articulate for the issues and factors that impact their lives.
